Mesterolone is an interesting anabolic steroid, though it is not a strong steroid for bodybuilding. It seems that the most common reason for many to consider including it in a steroid stack is for anti-estrogenic activity.
Benefits
Mesterolone has shown value in mental health issues, such as depression, sexual dysfunction, impotency and low libido. Additionally, mesterolone may enhance the effectiveness of other steroids. Mesterolone binds to estrogen receptors, reducing their activity, which not only reduces estrogen production, but also encourages natural testosterone production in the body.
Mesterolone has the ability to have a high affinity for SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin), which is a protein that binds to anabolic steroids in the bloodstream (namely, Testosterone) and renders them completely inactive once bound. The use of Mesterolone in this case alongside other anabolic steroids may magnify the activity and effects of other anabolic steroids through this pathway, leaving more unbound and free Testosterone to perform its job.
Another benefit of Mesterolone is its ability to act as an anti-estrogen via its activity as an aromatase inhibitor. It should be noted, however, that its activity as an aromatase inhibitor is not regarded as strong as Aromasin, Arimidex, or Letrozole, but it still works. In the days before anti-aromatases and the use of SERMs, there was some merit to this.
Mesterolone is not a substrate for aromatase, and so cannot be converted into an estrogen. As such, it has no propensity for producing estrogenic side effects such as gynecomastia or fluid retention.
Because mesterolone is not 17α-alkylated, it has little or no potential for hepatotoxicity.
Dosages and Half Life
The half life of Mesterolone is around 12 hours. A good recommended dosage is 25-75mg per day. The detection time of Mesterolone is 5-6 weeks. So those that are tested often would be wise to avoid this compound. Females are not advised to take Mesterolone because of its DHT properties. Side effects for females can be very nasty and unpredictable.
In the case of bodybuilders and athletes, Mesterolone is normally used between 50-150mg per day to either control Estrogen levels, reduce water retention (caused by estrogen), or to increase fertility following the conclusion of a cycle.
Mesterolone Side Effects
Because Mesterolone is primarily an androgen, it does carry with it the risk of androgenic side effects, and they are more pronounced with higher dosages. Mesterolone's androgenic side effects include: an increase in oily skin, increased facial hair and bodily hair growth, as well as the increased risk of triggering MPB (Male Pattern Baldness) in those that are genetically sensitive or predisposed to it.
